The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya' s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.

In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Reviews:

**Janet and Melissa, best friends in a way only fifth graders can understand, would have liked to spend the afternoon together, but Janet s mother wanted her home to clean her room. She could have taken the straight way home, but the swath around Willow Lake on Mr. Deed s property was more promising and inviting. The room would have to wait and so would Janet's mother because Janet never came home. After an initial canvassing of the neighborhood, Newbury, Connecticut s law enforcement officers issued an AMBER alert - they weren t going to trifle with this case.

Meanwhile, Peter Gram, a child psychiatry fellow, had little Naya Hastings under his watchful eye. Her parents had caught her just before she climbed off a balcony in an attempt to fly away. She appeared to be uncommonly awake and alert when she was sleepwalking and Dr. Gram had to rule out everything from psychosis to organic disease. There was something else very unusual about this child. Her drawings were too mature and detailed for a seven and a half year old and they were telling stories, stories about a girl named Janet. Naya s biological mother Meena knew that Naya had inherited her special abilities. Naya was meeting more frequently with Janet now, who was asking her to Look at my neck. She desperately wanted Naya to talk to that doctor.

Something thoroughly shocking, even to the most seasoned law enforcement officials was found on Elephant Rock and the forensic team's began to gather. One by one they arrived on the scene. Dr. Carroll Prize, renowned forensic entomologist leaned over the scene with Agent Leia Bines, a member of the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team, FBI. It was more urgent than ever that Naya reach Dr. Peter through her drawings. The big bad man was waiting to strike again. Look at my neck.

This book mesmerized me like no other book has done in some time. It was not a book with twists and turns at every step, but rather one that tugs the reader right along. I didn t have to be tugged very hard because this book was so superbly crafted I felt like reading into the wee hours of the morning (and I did). If you re looking for a psychological thriller, this has to be the best game in town!

**A Circle of Souls Reviewed By Cindy Bauer Of Bookpleasures.com

Preetham Grandhi, MD, immigrated to the United States from India to pursue a career in child and adolescent psychiatry. He currently resides in Westchester County, New York, with his family.

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. With the murderer on the loose, the police desperately look for any clues to lead to his identity. Meanwhile, a psychiatrist in a nearby hospital is also in a desperate search to find the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope. When these two situations converge, they set off an alarming chain of events. In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

In this debut psychological thriller by new author, Preetham Grandhi, a seven-year-old named Naya Hasting, now in the care of Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist appears to be communicating through her dreams with recently murdered, ten-year-old, Janet Troy.

But that s not all! Thirty years prior, there was another murder committed in almost the same manner and now the town of Newbury, Connecticut has something to worry about. Are the two murders connected? Do they have a serial killer in their midst?

Once Dr. Gram realizes Naya must know more about the recent murder of little Janet, in whatever unorthodox manner, he decides to try to help the FBI find the killer through Naya, who sketches images from her dreams and chillingly, are the only clues the FBI has in their search for this faceless, bad man .

Dr. Gram and FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children, combine their efforts and specialties in this page-turning, gripping novel. Naya also talks to the dead girl while sleepwalking and during their conversations, Janet shares snip-its of information the FBI on the case don t have, including information never brought forth to the public on the never-solved murder three decades ago, making the case even more puzzling and the story, more intriguing.

Preetham Grandhi backs up his plotting with his own medical knowledge in psychiatrics, making the story even more fascinating and believable. With each chapter broken down into time periods during days in a week, Grandhi s ever-twisting plot, descriptive prose and attention-grabbing dialogue will keep the reader engrossed as the author draws the reader deeper into the crevices of the mind of a disturbed child.

Also, Grandhi has masterfully blended the suspense of a thriller with the Federal agent assigned to the case and the psychological knowledge of the doctor assigned to the child whose parents have entrusted him with her care.

In the end, Dr. Gram is forced to accept the many lives a soul has actually had previously and his own past lives eventually led to the person he is today, compared to the person he was in another time, another realm. This isn t easy for him to deal with at first.

As a debut novel, the author has done very well and I m looking forward to future works. A definite must read!

**This is Preetham Grandhi's debut novel, and if this is any sign of what his future will be...it looks bright.

This novel pulled me in from the very beginning. It opened with a prologue that had me asking questions, and then immediately followed with the disappearance of a young girl. By chapter three Naya,a young girl with sleep walking and talking, had been added into the mix. I knew these sections were related to each other, but it took me the entire novel to figure out exactly what was going on.

Can Naya's dreams really be communication with the dead? Who could the slaaf be and who is his master? These are the two main questions in the novel. I knew from the beginning that the young girl was murdered by the slaaf and that somehow Naya seemed to be channeling the spirits of the dead. It was the way that Mr. Grandhi took his time weaving the story together and slowly exposing more that kept me pulled in. Mr. Grandhi's background as a child psychiatrist made the many scenes in the psychiatric unit of the hospital easy to follow and believable. He did a wonderful job of character and relationship building and made me feel as if I knew them. Near the end I thought I had determined the guilty party, but the twists and turns left me with enough of a question that I wasn't sure until it was revealed.

There were a couple of things about the novel that I really liked besides the story itself. First, it has short chapters that flowed together well. The chapters switched from one character to another, but were easy to follow. I also appreciated that the gore was kept to a minimum. Several gory things occurred, but the novel wasn't hard to read. The scenes were described in a way that left you with no doubt as to what happened, but didn't get lost in unnecessary gruesome details.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good mystery. This is a psychological thriller that makes you think about exactly what the mind can do, and what exactly your dreams may mean.

**This novel by new author Preetham Grandhi is a riveting work of strong and unique characters. A delicate young girl begins to have strange dreams, a horrific killer strikes a peaceful community, and the genesis of a story of love, human evil, and struggle are revealed with the an artist's touch.
Can the caring doctor help the young girl in his care? Can he make sense of her troubling dreams before something terrible happens to her? More importantly, can he really believe what her dreams seem to mean about the nature of reality and of life and death?

The author draws from his own expertise to establlish a believable and honest character dealing with something unique and inspiring.

Strongly recommended as a welcome addition to lovers of suspense, the paranormal, crime stories, and a good read.

**I've just finished reading A Circle of Souls, by Preetham Grandhi.

As soon as I accepted his offer of an ARC for review, I had second thoughts. What if I didn't like the book? What if I wasn't able to comprehend the material? What if I couldn't think of anything to say about the book? What could I possible add, to the comments already printed on the back of the book, by Judge Judy Sheindlin, Linda Fairstein and M. J. Rose?

My worries were unnecessary. In my opinion Dr. Grandhi should keep his day job (as a pediatric and adolescent psychiatrist - as Chief of Service for House 5 at Bronx Children's Psychiatric Hospital- and in private practice in Westchester County, NY) and then use every spare moment on nights and weekends putting pen to paper! A Circle of Souls, grabbed me on the first page, and held on to the very end. Before now, I had never read a murder with a paranormal twist, but you can be assured, that I'll now be reading more of this particular genre.

On several occasions, I had just about convinced myself, that I had figured out "who done it", and then after reading a few more chapters, I'd have another suspect to add to my list.

This may sound strange, as this story is about a gruesome crime (and the sick and complex mind of a killer), but I found it to be "touching". Dr. Grandhi has a gentle, simple, and easy to read style of writing AND he was able to tell a tale of horror without the use of foul language or explicit gratuitous sexual content. He used his medical expertise and Indian background, to weave a story of suspense, mental illness, and the idea of a connection that some [of the living], seem to have with the dead.

A Circle of Souls gets a big thumbs up.

Dr. Grandhi - thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to read your book, and have it be my very first review.
My copy of A Circle of Souls, will be displayed proudly on my bookshelf!

**Last night I sat up and read the debut novel, A Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi. I started the book yesterday and thought I'd read a while before bedtime as is my habit. I did not stop until the end. This engrossing story captured me, and I must say held me until the final page.

It began with the gruesome abduction and murder of a young girl in Newbury,Connecticut, but this was not your usual 'Investigate and solve the crime' tale.

Central to the story are the characters of Dr. Peter Gram, a pediatric psychiatrist, and another little girl named Naya, who is haunted by nightmares that have resulted in terrifying her parents to the point, that they have brought her into Dr. Gram's emergency room.

Dr. Gram finds himself faced with a scenario that challenges his learned medical training, and his perceived notions of diagnostic reasoning. Indeed, he learns that sometimes there are no pat, textbook answers.

This book is a quickly engaging, psychological thriller, with a touch of the paranormal. I don't want to give too much away, but this story is chilling, and I don't mean just the murder at the beginning either. I found it to be a quick read, and am looking forward to more from this author who writes on the subject of child psychiatry with the clarity and authority of one who knows his subject matter well.

**Awesome read!

Right at the beginning, i was hooked when the "slaaf" caught his prey for his master in hopes of pleasing him and to redeem him and i was so SCARED but i couldn't put it down!! I had to find out what this psycho was going to do next ! You know when your watching a movie and you know where the killer is and your yelling at the police "he's over there, can't you see that??!!" That's how i felt throughout the story, i was sitting on the edge of my seat, tensed and hoping when i turned the page the police would figure it out!

The author incorporates his expertise in this psychological thriller. Dr Peter Gram, a child psychiatrist, is called in to treat Naya, who is having severe nightmares and what he finds out shocks him. Agent Leia Bines, FBI's expert in missing children is the lead in the investigation of a missing 6 year old girl Janet, who never made it home after school. I'm not one to reveal too much of the story, you just have to read it, you definitely won't be disappointed!!

This one deserves a 10 - I hope he writes another Dr. Peter Gram book!

**A CIRCLE OF SOULS and the expert who wrote it
June 28th, 2009

IF you missed this extraordinary book the first time it appeared, A CIRCLE OF SOULS is now in bookstores, in paperback - a really stunning display of psychological suspense.  Talk about writing what you know, the book is authored by Preetham Grandhi, a child psychiatrist who has written a debut novel that is as gripping as anything I've read.  Dr. Grandhi is not only a brilliant scientist (I met him because his father-in-law, a protege of my late father s, really saved my mother s life and Preetham became part of the team, until the end).  The story is very unconventional, and a wonderful change from the genre in which I usually read.  I just picked up the book for a second time (I read it first two years ago) and it reveals something different this time around.  Haunting and enlightening, I commend A CIRCLE OF SOULS to you with very high praise.
